Match report Wanstead won the toss and, mindful ofthe forecast of heavy showers later in the afternoon, invited Benfleet to bat. An explosive start saw Hussnain Kazmi take 3 wickets in his first over. After 6 overs Benfleet were reduced to 17 for 4 but an excellent stand enabled them to reach 77 before losing their 5th wicket. Further wickets fell at regular intervals but a very good last wicket stand enabled Benfleet to take advantage of some slightly wayward Wanstead bowling towards the end of the inings to reach 128. Hussnain Kazmi was the pick of the bowlers with 5 for 42 and Giri Rathakrisnan was his normal parsimonious self, bowling 7 overs for 13 runs. There were also good spells from Barney Meade and Will Wade.

The weather was starting to deteriorate and after reaching 46 for 1 in 10 overs a heavy downpour delayed the Wanstead reply. Following the stoppage it was clear that we needed to try and reach the 129 need for victory as quickly as possible before it rained again. Although ahead of the run rate required it was by no means certain that we would get through the 20 overs needed to constitute a match. We had reached 69 for 2 in the 13th over when Ismail Dar came to the wicket. He was quickly into his stride to give the innings the impetus it needed at that stage as the skies were darkening and the weather deteriorating rapidly. Consecutive fours in the 18th over enabled us to pass the Benfleet score just before the heavens opened. Within a few minutes of the winning runs being scored several parts of the outfield were under water – it had been a close run thing.

Once again this was a very solid performance that enabled us to record our third victory in the competition. An accomplished all round bowling performance was complemented by some very good batting, the highlights of which were Ismail’s unbeaten 38 from 28 balls and Ayush Singh’s 45 not out.
